What a sad day. Mate really put up some great content from the “other” side of the world. He was a huge draw for me I read all his stories no matter what they were about. He’ll be missed, but I’m sure with his skills and talent he’ll be snapped up real soon by someone worthy of him.

Máté got fucked over in a really ugly way. Gawker Media decided to close their Budapest office today. He was writing an article (The Ferrari one) as he found out he was getting fired.

Jalopnik has been in the habit of fucking over its writers lately.

Yeah. Party-vi pointed out earlier on Oppo that the Budapest office also had ad-sales and tech support staff, so I suspect that this was more of a Gawker Media decision than anyone at Jalopnik, but between this and Sean (and losing Tyler), things are not looking good for the future. It’s especially frustrating to see people getting canned without any acknowledgement from the site (although that’s possibly because people are trying to keep a low profile).

He dropped into Oppo earlier to say that a Gizmodo and two Kotaku writers got canned at the same time he did. The entire Budapest GM office got axed.

Yeah i’m sure it was gawker and the guys at Jalopnik were just as stunned as we were. Time to find a new gathering place, I think Jalopnik’s time is very short

They would, even if it had a 4 year old in it apparently

He had great reviews and I loved his articles about Euro models. Jalopnik has suffered a lot of loss lately. Remember when it was just one great article after another? Now it’s two sponsored posts, shameless commission -driven “commerce team” post, and largely irrelevant cross-site posts before you get to an interesting article.

Gawker did the Budapest office dirty, but the top level execs don’t care.

yep, the glory days of Jalopnik are long gone. I think Tyler was smart to jump ship when he did. the writing is on the wall. I hope all the jalop guys/girls can land on their feet somewhere. Hopefully somewhere that doesn’t have such glaring political bias. I fear what will happen to Jalopnik during the actual election. we’ll be bombarded with nonstop political crap. It’s obvious no one at Gawker cares. not a single mention of it officially that I can find.

I only found out when Ash commented about it on his COTD stuff.

Soon the Gawker overlords will demand Jalopnik share pieces about Hillary Clinton from Gawker because “she rides in a Suburban” and they have a political agenda. It’d be great to see Jalopnik spin off from Gawker.
